AI Coding Reading List

It’s been a wild, WILD week to say the least and through it all the AI news has just kept rolling. This week we’re covering AI coding adoption, benchmark gaming over at Meta, a leaked internal memo from Shopify’s CEO and much more.

Here’s what we’re reading this week:

How AI Coding Tools Can Help Engineers Level Up – a Four Step Guide, Plus Real-World Use Cases You Can Borrow
By Greta Heissenberger

Helping engineering teams embrace and master AI coding tools can lead to significant performance gains, faster onboarding, and stronger collaboration. But given how quickly these tools are evolving, it’s essential to start using them now and continuously train your team on how to effectively integrate them into their daily workflows.

Here are just 4 ways the engineering team at Jellyfish is embracing AI (plus real-world use cases and examples):

  1. Understanding and Gaining Context on Legacy Code

“Meta really stepped in it here for sure,” says to Nicholas Arcolano, Jellyfish Head of Research. After releasing their new AI model this week, news broke showing Meta had gamed their AI benchmarks. “It’s indicative of their internal struggles and other issues contributing to the fact they’re not winning in the AI space,” Nic added.

“More interesting is that this is illustrative of the whole obsession with benchmarks in general – they’re not the only one ‘overtraining’ and it highlights how benchmark performance doesn’t always mean a better product. It’s why Claude 3.7 continues to be robust even while others climb above it on the leaderboards,” Nic said.

By Douglas B. Laney

A now widely circulated internal memo from Shopify CEO, Tobias Lütke, says, “Using AI effectively is now a fundamental expectation of everyone at Shopify.”

Lütke goes on in the memo to make the following points:

  • AI must be part of your GSD Prototype phase.
  • We will add AI usage questions to our performance and peer review questionnaire
  • Learning is self-directed but share what you learned.
  • Before asking for more Headcount and resources, teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI.

Reacting to this presentation from Booking.com and Sourcegraph, AI commentator Shawn Wang writes: “What doesn’t travel well is how AI is improving every aspect of the SDLC and how THAT is actually perhaps even more impactful than the individual contributor tooling.”
